What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body. These cells can grow and change in response to hormones in the menstrual cycle, this can cause inflammation, pain and scar tissue.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Symptoms vary from person to person, some may have severe and debilitating symptoms, others may have no symptoms at all. Symptoms are not always related to the location, amount or the type of endometriosis. It’s also important to know that endometriosis symptoms can also be symptoms of other health conditions.

Diagnosis of Endometriosis

The primary method for diagnosing endometriosis is laparoscopy, a surgical procedure where a camera is inserted to visualize the pelvic organs and identify any endometriosis lesions. While other methods like imaging (ultrasound, MRI) and blood tests (CA-125) can be helpful, they are not definitive for diagnosis.

About Us

Endo Charity Ghana is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women affected by endometriosis in Ghana. Founded by Katherine Berkoh, a passionate advocate and endometriosis survivor, the charity strives to raise awareness, provide support, and facilitate access to better diagnosis and management of this debilitating condition.

Our Mission

To transform the landscape of endometriosis care and understanding in Ghana through:

  • Education and Awareness: Increasing public and healthcare professional awareness of endometriosis, its symptoms, and its impact.
  • Advocacy: Championing for improved healthcare policies, resources, and specialist care for individuals with endometriosis.
  • Support: Creating supportive communities and providing resources for those navigating their endometriosis journey.
  • Empowerment: Equipping women with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their own health and seek timely medical attention.

A Ghana where endometriosis is widely understood, promptly diagnosed, and adequately treated, ensuring that no woman has to suffer in silence or face the challenges of endometriosis alone. We envision a future where individuals with endometriosis can live full, healthy, and productive lives, free from the physical, emotional, and social burdens of the disease.

My Story

At the age of 14 (1989), I had severe menstrual pain and began to seek for diagnosis since I ended up in hospital every month. I couldn’t understand what was happening to me and felt weird. All my friends go through their menstrual cycle with no hassle yet I was in so much agony. Period pains was normal, I was told, and if I seemed to suffer more than most, it must be because I had a “low pain threshold”.

My mother (the late Comfort Berkoh) would panic when the time of the month got closer because of the pain I had to go through. At the time she was frustrated because all we were told was menstrual pain is supposed to hurt and it was normal. I went through series of x-rays and scans and was told I had cysts over the years. I was diagnosed with dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and put on pills, but I was still in pain. I dreaded going to the hospital every month because the nurses would insult me and say my mother was pampering me. My pulse would always go up the minute we go there. It was a real struggle.
